Pedestrian City

Before getting started you will need a  Gmail account to create a map and a Flickr account to link your photos.

Step one: create your map and place markers

  1. Go to Google Maps and select My Maps on the left hand side of the page, then Create new map.
  2. Click on the place marker tool, which looks like an upside-down tear shape and drag the icon to place it on the location you want to describe.
  3. To edit the title of the point, double click on the place marker and a small window will open. Enter a title for the point.
  4. Choose a colour or symbol for your point of interest by clicking on the icon image in the top right corner of the small window.

Step two: add photos

  1. To add a photo to your map, first upload it to a Flickr account. Flickr is the easiest way to link photos to your map.
  2. After you have uploaded your photos to Flickr, pick the photo and find the link to the photo by clicking on All sizes across the top of the photo. Select and copy the photo's URL, then go back to your map.
  3. In the small window connected to your place marker, choose the Rich text option. Click on the photo button on the right hand side and paste the link to your image.

 Step three: trace your route

  1. To trace your route select the line feature, this looks like the letter N (beside the place marker).
  2. I recommend using the default setting “Draw a line”.
  3. Select a starting point on your map.
  4. The most important tip for tracing a route is to click at the end of each line, at corners and such, otherwise the lines will shift.

Step four: sharing your map

  1. Click Save.
  2. Click Done.
  3. Find the link for your map on the right side of the blue banner across the top of the map.
  4. Copy and send the link for your map to psychogeo@pedestriancity.ca
